Baggage: Amazing Diversity in Size and Design
The word baggage is used in the same sense a luggage today which includes bags, cases, containers that keep travelers’ articles. Today, the baggage has more stylistic appeal as the functional aspects alone does not please the aesthetic appeal of a product. In traditional English use the word baggage smacked a military connotation. It represented the personal goods and military hardware carried by personnel along with the rearguard in pre-modern warfare.
Today, baggage is closely associated with the aviation industry. The industry is forced to introduce standardization in the handling of the baggage as the aircraft cabins are designed in a specific size and the luggage has to be placed in them securely as safety measure in air traffic.
There is an amazing variety in the size and shape of the baggage. The word, trunk, chest or box represents today fairly large containers that cannot be carried in hand. The box in ancient times was made of a rare tree called the box tree. Because of the rarity of the boxwood they were mainly used for making small casks. The smallness associated with it eventually was lost. Today, a box implies a large size. The boxes, chests and trunks are today shipped or go into the luggage hold of an aircraft.
Today, suitcases are common. They are often wheeled. However, non-wheeled versions are also seen. Some times these are wheeled in an upright position. They are made of light weight at the same time tough material that can withstand the wear and tear of somewhat tough handling. The wheels are very helpful in the short hauls between the car and the baggage handling kiosk of an airline as the traveler can avoid the service of a traditional porter.
In relation to traveling there are two types of baggage in vogue today. They are the hold luggage that the passenger should place in the hold of a modern train compartment. If he is flying a modern aircraft the luggage handling is done by professional handlers. In contrast to the hold baggage the passenger do not keep near him or her there are the hand bags that the passengers are allowed to carry in the aircraft, bus or train. In North-American English these are called carry-on. These are meant for personal clothes, documents, valuables, medicines and cash that the passengers would not like to leave in the hold baggage. The airlines, modern buses and passenger trains have standard sized cabins either on the roof of the cabin or under the seat meant for this hand luggage. With airlines, buses or trains having standardized their cabins it is imperative to know the measurement and weight that is authorized in a flight.
Women also carry very small bags called lady’s hand bags. They are of amazing range and quality with mind boggling price tags. They are today perceived as fashion accessories and come in different hues and shapes. Some of the brands are symbols of ultimate luxury of a fashion conscious woman.
